Community Spotlight: The Best Spots to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Milwaukee

It isn’t often that Cinco de Mayo happens to fall on the same day as the Kentucky Derby. Yet that is what we all have to look forward to on Saturday, May 5.

From fancy dress, humongous hats and Mint Juleps to nacho bars and some of the best margaritas in Milwaukee, May 5 is sure to be a day to remember.

At River House, we are hosting “Derby de Mayo,” offering residents and visitors alike the chance to enjoy the collision of these truly fabulous celebrations. A nacho bar will be set up at our sixth floor lounge from 4 to 5 p.m., and Mint Juleps will be the drink of choice.

Before or after all that fun, here are a few of our favorite things going on in Milwaukee on May 5:

BelAir Cantina, 1935 N. Water Street

BelAir Cantina is pulling out all the stops for Cinco de Mayo, making it into a two-day celebration. The party starts at 11 a.m. Friday, May 4 and continues when BelAir opens early at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 5.

Mariachi Zamora will play from 8 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Los Plebes de la Sierra will play from 10 to 11 p.m. Saturday. There will also be $5 Cinco Margaritas de la mañana a la noche!

Red Lion Pub, 1850 N. Water Street

At Red Lion Pub, their aptly named event is entitled “Talk Derby to Me.” From 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 5, sip on Mint Juleps or sample from a variety of other drink specials. Get fancy with your most over-the-top hats for a chance to win the best hat contest as well!

Fancy dress is encouraged.

Vagabond, 1122 N. Edison Street

If you haven’t been to Vagabond before, you’re missing out. The eclectic decor provides a truly unique atmosphere to enjoy a wide variety of tacos and other Mexican fare.

Starting at 11 a.m., enjoy tacos, margaritas, chips, salsa, guac and live music. There will be a photo booth, and various shot and drink specials throughout the day as well.
