Milwaukee Un-Leashed: A Guide to Dog-Friendly Places in Milwaukee

He’s the happy greeter at the door when you get home from work. She’s your favorite pal to watch the latest episode of Scandal with. You share your home, your heart and your life with them.

Dogs. From the ground up, they’re pretty special little (or large) creatures. No matter the breed, each and every one tells a unique story with their eyes and loves with their whole heart.

And we love them. Especially in Milwaukee, a bustling city recognized multiple times in recent months as an up-and-coming place to be.

From off-leash dog parks to bars and cafes that allow our four-legged family members to dine with us, Milwaukee has it all. A quick search of a fun, pup-friendly page called BringFido.com revealed more than 100 dining options, more than 30 dog-friendly hotels, and dozens of activities and local events.

Here are some of our favorite places and events that are dog-friendly in Milwaukee:

Release the hounds at Milwaukee dog parks

There’s something about that moment when you first release a dog at a dog park. Though no two dogs react the same, more often than not they’re off to the races the second they are free of that pesky leash. The joy abounds as they race to greet other canine pals, search what you would think is uncharted territory (despite numerous prior trips) and sniffing as far as the eye can see.

Milwaukee is home to several area dog parks, including favorites like Granville, Estabrook Park, Bay View Dog Park, Currie Park and Warnimont Park. Pups are also allowed, mostly on leash, on a number of trails and paths, including the Oak Leaf Trail and McKinley Marina Park.

Bone appetit: Dog-friendly restaurants in Milwaukee

Out on a long walk with your pup and want to stop for a bite to eat? A surprising number of restaurants, bars and cafes allow dogs to chill with you while you dine al fresco. Rock Bottom Brewery, Camp Bar, Cafe Benelux, Wicked Hop, Art Bar and The Backyard, and Balzac to name a few.

Some local hot spots even hold special events tailored for dog lovers. DiModa Pizza and Hotspot, for example, regularly hosts events for pet lovers. They had a Halloween costume party last fall, and this spring they are hosting a “Paint Your Pet” event to raise money for the Rescue Gang.

Dog-friendly activities in Milwaukee

There are all sorts of seasonal fun to enjoy with your furry friends, as well. For on the water fun with your pup, Milwaukee Boat Line cruises welcome leashed pets on their public summer cruises.

Elsewhere on Lake Michigan, Lakeshore Paddle Boat Sport Rentals allows you to paddle with your pooch.

Dog-friendly luxury living in Milwaukee

And apartment homes that don’t allow dogs are a thing of the past.

At River House, for example, we welcome four-legged family members with open arms and loving hearts. We are a pet-friendly luxury apartment community in the middle of everything in downtown Milwaukee.

Our pets are active members of our community as well, as we regularly organize pet-friendly events and offer them a pet spa experience.
